By Stephen Long
We're pretty good at playing mind games on ourselves aren't we? Many of you have fooled yourself into thinking that being afraid of changing careers means you shouldn't go ahead and pursue a job change. You probably figured that if you're that concerned about making a career change happen, that maybe you shouldn't even bother and not take any chances.

When did you become so consumed with fear? There are many people that feel that once they chose a career that they are tied to the same company or job field. Many people don't think they have the options or abilities to switch employers and do something different. Many times we sell our abilities short! Without trying to make any changes, the more unhappy and discontent people become with their work. Many times when people consider a different field though, they become overwhelmed with fear and figure they are stuck where they are.

Many times we tend to think that we won't make enough money at our new job, or won't like it. The worst fear or a employment change could be that we fail. SOme of us don't even try to get that new career because we feel that we wouldn't land the job in the first place. Maybe you feel that the new career is below you and you feel like you are simply "wasting your degree". Can you identify to any of these fears or concerns in you?

One of the ways to move forward and past the career fears is by not waiting for your fear to disappear before changing employment and instead taking action despite being fearful. It's very normal to be afraid when you are making a career change. If you weren't,

I'd have to make sure that you are still breathing! You have got to realize that you are not supposed to supresss your fear in order to be able to switch employers.

You must accept your fear as a part of this career changing transformation. Once you can do that, let yourself be afraid but still move forward to take the steps needed to get that next career. Looking behind you then can see that your fear was unfounded and was not really a big deal after all! Take a deep breath and let the fear go and take the first step. It won't be that bad, go for it!
